In this exclusive conversation, Palestine Action co-founder Huda Ammori sits down for her first in-person interview in two years.

Speaking to Matt Kennard of Palestine Deep Dive, Ammori reflects on the extraordinary journey of the direct action movement she launched in 2020, from its campaign against Israeli weapons manufacturer Elbit Systems to its proscription by the UK government in 2025.

Ammori discusses the events leading up to the ban, the targeting of RAF Brize Norton, the government’s use of terrorism legislation, and why she believes the attempt to suppress Palestine Action has instead generated unprecedented public support and drawn greater attention to Britain’s role in the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

Although the High Court ruled in February 2026 that the Palestine Action ban had breached the right to protest and had been incorrectly taken by ministers, the Court of Appeal earlier this month upheld the proscription which Ammori says she intends to appeal to the UK Supreme Court. As legal challenges continue and new groups emerge to carry forward similar tactics, Ammori argues that the movement’s core message has reached further than ever before.

Palestine Action remains legally classified as a proscribed organisation in the United Kingdom under the Terrorism Act 2000. Expressing support for the group is a criminal offence.

The second Jewish Anti-Zionist Congress is set to take place in Dublin, Ireland later this week.

The 2026 iteration builds on last year’s inaugural gathering held in Vienna, the birthplace of political Zionism, where the movement was formally launched. It was in that very city that Theodor Herzl published Der Judenstaat in February 1896, the seminal work that laid the foundations for modern political Zionism and helped give rise to the Zionist movement.

Organisers of the Jewish Anti-Zionist Congress view the establishment of their organisation in Vienna as a symbolic reversal of that history, arguing that the same city that witnessed the birth of political Zionism is now hosting a growing Jewish movement opposed to Zionism and supportive of Palestinian liberation, equality, and self-determination.

“Palestinians had nothing to do with the Holocaust,” activist and author Andrew Feinstein, who is a member of the organisation, tells Palestine Deep Dive. “But it is Palestinians who have suffered the consequences of the establishment, creation, and extreme militarisation of the state of Israel,” he says.

The upcoming three-day conference brings together a range of participants including academics, journalists, politicians, and activists to discuss the evolving landscape of Jewish anti-Zionist thought and its role in contemporary political discourse. Organisers describe this year’s theme as a shift “from words into action”, focusing on practical resistance to Zionist settler-colonialism.

Muhammad Umer Khalid is a 22-year-old political activist from Stockport currently held on remand at HMP Wormwood Scrubs in London. He is one of the defendants known as the "Brize Norton 6" facing charges related to a break-in at the UK's largest airbase, RAF Brize Norton.

Following his detention and the British government's subsequent proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation, Khalid became a prominent figure in prison protests.

Palestine Deep Dive travels to meet his mother, Shabana Khalid, who reflects on Umer's childhood, his unwavering sense of justice, and the values that shaped him into the person he is today. She also recounts the challenges her family has faced during Umer's imprisonment, including concerns about his health, restrictions on communication, and the pain that comes with prolonged separation.

Dr Ghada Karmi is a celebrated Palestinian author, physician and academic. She was born in Jerusalem before being ethnically cleansed as a child during the Nakba in 1948. Dr Karmi later trained as a doctor of medicine at Bristol University. She established the first British-Palestinian medical charity in 1972 and was an Associate Fellow at the Royal Institute for International Affairs. Her previous books include One State The Only Democratic Future for Palestine-Israel and the best-selling In Search of Fatima.

Ilan Pappé is a professor at the University of Exeter. He was formerly a senior lecturer in political science at the University of Haifa. He is the author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, The Modern Middle East, A History of Modern Palestine: One Land, Two Peoples, and Ten Myths about Israel.
