Yet, it bears the fateful seeds of future strife. The Sunni-Shia divide, religious fanaticism, and the stirrings of Islamist extremism all started then. These themes emerge as the story of a passionate love that ends in murder unfolds.

Dr Ghada Karmi is a celebrated Palestinian author, physician and academic. She was born in Jerusalem before being ethnically cleansed as a child during the Nakba in 1948. Dr Karmi later trained as a doctor of medicine at Bristol University. She established the first British-Palestinian medical charity in 1972 and was an Associate Fellow at the Royal Institute for International Affairs. Her previous books include One State The Only Democratic Future for Palestine-Israel and the best-selling In Search of Fatima.

Ilan Pappé is a professor at the University of Exeter. He was formerly a senior lecturer in political science at the University of Haifa. He is the author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, The Modern Middle East, A History of Modern Palestine: One Land, Two Peoples, and Ten Myths about Israel.

Venezuela’s president was abducted last week in a U.S. military operation that left at least 80 people dead, including 32 Cubans tasked with protecting President Nicolás Maduro. Just days earlier, Israel’s prime minister — international fugitive Benjamin Netanyahu, wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes — departed Washington, D.C., after being warmly received by U.S. officials.

Ahmed Masoud is a writer and director who grew up in the Gaza Strip and moved to London in 2002. His debut novel ‘Vanished: The Mysterious Disappearance of Mustafa Ouda’ won the Muslim Writers Awards. His theatre credits include ‘The Shroud Maker’, ‘Camouflage’, ‘Walaa’, ‘Loyalty’, ‘Go to Gaza, Drink the Sea’ and ‘Escape from Gaza’. He is the founder of Al Zaytouna Dance Theatre, for whom he has written and directed several productions for the London stage, and subsequent European tours.

Sahar Francis reports how Israel still holds more than 9,100 Palestinians in its prisons, 5,000 of whom are held in Israeli prisons in “administrative detention” or as “unlawful combatants” – i.e. illegal detention without charge or trial.

During the last two years of Israel’s genocide on Gaza, the Israeli Occupation Forces have unlawfully detained over 409 Palestinian healthcare workers from both Gaza and the West Bank.

There are at least 115 more Palestinian healthcare workers from Gaza who are still being held in Israeli detention. These include at least 20 doctors, of whom 15 are irreplaceable senior specialists.
