I have this idea that there are only two reasonable responses to injustice – grief and rage. And so the only reasonable responses to extreme injustice are extreme grief and extreme rage. And both of these leave a mark – on you and on others. Grief – the wound is primarily self-inflicted though it affects all of those around you who care about you. Rage - you wound others. You lash out. Somebody must pay.
I can’t speak for Gabor Mate, but it has always seemed to me that he has chosen grief. That to grieve is to swallow the pain and to rage is to spit it. And that swallowing the pain is an act of atonement…for your own sins or the sins of others. An attempt to douse the flames And that spitting the pain is an indictment, a prosecution…fuel for the fire.
It seems to me that Gabor has made the decision that rage - no matter how justified – left more charred bodies in its wake. And he chose grief.
But, in the first clip, as we watch Gabor struggle with his impatience, his irritation and his anger, it is clear that grief and rage don’t exist along a straight line with grief at one end and rage at the other. They curl back on each other so that grief seeps over into rage and rage into grief. But they aren’t hard to tell apart. Grief searches for a shared pain, a shared humanity, a shared understanding of joy and sorrow, a world in common. Rage indicts and prosecutes. Rage draws the line in the sand, then builds the wall then places the guards along the ramparts.

One such decision is the 2019 Israeli Supreme Court ruling that permits the military ruler to temporarily bury the bodies in what is known as the “Numbers Cemetery”. By the end of 2021, the Israeli Knesset (or Parliament) had passed laws allowing the army and police to hold onto the bodies of dead Palestinians.
Israeli doctor Meira Weiss disclosed in her book Over Their Dead Bodies that organs taken from dead Palestinians were utilised in medical research at Israeli universities’ medical faculties and were transplanted into Jewish-Israeli patients’ bodies.
Even more concerning are admissions made by Yehuda Hess, the former director of Israel’s Abu Kabir Institute of Forensic Medicine, about the theft of human tissues, organs, and skin from dead Palestinians over a period of time without their relatives’ knowledge or approval.
Israel is thought to be the biggest hub for the illegal global trade in human organs, according to a 2008 investigation by the American CNN network, which also revealed that Israel participated in the theft of organs from dead Palestinians for illegal use.
