Veteran journalist and author Victoria Brittain speaks to Palestine Deep Dive’s Jehan Alfarra about the long shadow of Guantánamo Bay and the so-called “War on Terror”, and what its legacy reveals about Gaza today.
Brittain has spent decades reporting from Vietnam, Africa, the Middle East and Palestine. Her book Shadow Lives: The Forgotten Women of the War on Terror explored the lives of women and families left behind when men were imprisoned without charge, often in systems built around secrecy, exceptional law and indefinite detention.
The conversation explores what Guantánamo represented, how extraordinary measures can gradually become normalised, and the striking and frightening parallels with the treatment of Palestinians today.
